another day another trip

today i dropped my brother off at school then went to uni to check out my classes and to see if i could get some free stuff. alas i'm a week early :(. will try next week. when i wondered around i saw some really cool moniters being installed. lcd widescreen. massive displays for use uni students to use. hope i don't get to addicted to them else i'll need to go buy one for home use ;). came home and walked my brother home. then started to cook dinner. its now boiling down to spegatti sauce. i also got fed up with the fan on my brothers graphics card so i pulled it apart and oiled it as well as cleaned out all the dust from it. hope it runs real good and quiter now.

working, working and more working

well this weekend i am doing one 9hours shift and one 10hour shift. 1pm to 10pm and 12pm to 10pm. those are some long days :( but the cash is good :) hope it keeps coming.

extra work from no where.

now heres something you don't see everyday. my work had me rostered for only 4 hours this week. but i have been chatting to one of the higher ups about my position and it seems i have accidently been stranded between 2 departments which leaves me in a bit of a spot. because of it, i'm back to causal rates and also no hours. i'm use to 20 hours a week, well not working them persee but the cash flow from those hours. and its the middle of the week. wednesday and i get a phone call from work asking if i could work. well of course i say yes. and then i get 26hours + the 4 hours i work at darra. so i'm over the moon but i bet my body will be on the floor sleeping by the end of the 4 day hike.

the first post in months

time has seems to have slipped away from me over the last couple of months. its seems like it was only November when i put in my last post. allot has happened to me over the last 3 months. uni's about to start. i had a big paycheck from working boxing day. worked 22 hours or more for the last 4 weeks but my contract ended and i'm out of work for a week fingers crossed its only a week.

nuclear compared to coal

Nuclear plants are a thorny issue. Their thermal efficiency is lousy, too - all that steam coming out of the cooling towers represents wasted energy. But their pollution output is, arguably, close to zero per kilowatt-hour. Nuclear waste management seems to me to be a very simple issue that's only made complex by politics. But that still means it's complex, so you can't accurately estimate how much of a problem it actually is.

In a world run by rational people, you'd just leave the waste from 40 years of operation of a large nuke plant to cool inside the decommissioned plant for another 40 years - or longer, if you like - then finally truck it away in, oh, maybe ten standard shipping containers (each of which has had its volume halved by armour - that's really all the space it would take), drop it in a big geologically stable hole somewhere, and post ten guards to stop nuts from trying to steal it.

The waste from 40 years of equivalent coal plant operation would fill a fair-sized harbour. And it'd be radioactive, too - not radioactive enough that you should worry about it if you're not breathing it in (that's why fly ash collectors are such a big deal), but certainly radioactive enough that it'd be categorised as low-level waste and treated like Instant Death if it had come from a nuclear plant instead.
